Summary: Carmen Marc Valvo’s spring ’12 collection encapsulated a fresh summer’s day at the shore, though in the best way the designer knows how—retro chic maillots, ultra-feminine skirts and fluttering chiffon gowns. I imagined a Hamptons vacation circa 1950’s, brimming with boardwalk romances by day – outfitted in navy stripes, sundresses and a twist neck maillot – and glamorous socialite dances at night where white gloves kept the champagne and floral appliqued gowns spotless.
Yet, despite the sophisticated sense of refinement to the pieces (which always has been Valvo’s signature touch) the pieces were more youthful than seasons past. More casual fabrics like cotton and voile were evident and a canvas romper was so cute and of the moment, I wanted to snatch it right off the runway. It would not, however, be a proper CMV show without the chiffon and organza, which Valvo also kept light and airy in pastels like toffee and pink lemonade or with sheer horizontal stripes. This was easy, effortless glamour and Valvo is adept at showing that it’s possible for anyone to achieve.
