Summary: The DKNY Spring 2012 presentation was on September 11th. Donna Karan payed tribute to the ten year anniversary in large bold lettering on the front of the line sheet, remembering the courage, inspiration, compassion and strength of New York City. It felt like a different kind of day for a fashion show, and that said, the models made a different kind of entrance. They came into the loft from outside on the street and circled around and back out. The show started with bold, true to DKNY black and ivory separates, followed by denim and then on to large red and blue floral prints and stripes. Next there was a series of splatter prints (think composition notebook marble) on separates and swimwear, followed by flowing blouses with shorts, dresses and coverups in shades of Ultra Pink and white and finally back to black. All of the models wore big floppy hats, which I thought were not just flirty fun-in-the-sun statements, but also very sensible protection! Donna Karan’s theme for this presentation, ‘American Expressionist’ brought West Coast ease together with East Coast edge. Everything was designed for life on the move. The most notable shape in the collection is the “Step Dress, Shirts or Jacket” which is short in front and long in the back and great for layering. The show ended with American Woman by The Guess Who…the perfect tune to compliment this strong and flirty DKNY collection.
