Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring ’12. Callula Lillibelle’s Polka Dotted Delight

Summary: Although their label was established just last year, design team Melanie Fraser Heart and William Calvert have developed a clear vision for their Callula Lillibelle line, one whose punchy, cheeky aesthetic was on full display this week at their presentation in Lincoln Center.

There’s a vintage quality to the shape of their garments — slim, tailored dresses, accentuated waists, and a true embrace of the female form — that provides a strong foundation for their witty diversions. The polka dot is a visual leitmotif throughout the collection, but where it could seem childlike it only feels chic, exhibited in classic black/white, red/white color combinations that remain strong amongst the pops of pink, coral, gold and turquoise which accessorize the looks.

Such prints and the exaggerated proportions of giant clutches, oversized belts, and slouchy boyfriend blazers with elongated lapels present a playful vibe — one that speaks to a woman who enjoys flirting with her clothing, always the center of attention.

All in all — Callula Lillibelle is a true delight. The collection accentuates and celebrates what many love so much about fall but what tends to fall flat in the spring: the styling opportunities and the excited shift into a layered visual palate. Even their tulle ballgown transcends the awkward “prom dress” feel that has a tendency to sneak its way into the final looks of spring collections. Bold and fun without ever seeming too much, this fresh set of looks shows exciting promise for spring.
