Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring ’12. Ohne Titel: It’s All in the Details

Summary: Flora Gill and Alexa Adams have put together one stunner of spring collection, which showed today to a veritable “who’s who” of fashion audiences at Milk Studios. Although a newer label (the two women have been working together for a while, but only founded Ohne Titel in 2006), they have clearly won over the fashion community — including Anna Wintour, Anna Della Russo, Carine Roitfeld, Bill Cunningham, Kate Lanphear, Cathy Horyn, and Stefano Tonchi, who were all in attendance today (among many others).

But while a studio filled with fashion’s most revered celebrities is certainly exciting, the clothes still have to hold their own. And at Ohne Titel, they did. In a big way. Styled by Giovanna Bataglia, the collection mixes an artful array of unique colors which were pleasantly contrasting (pistachio vs. cobalt, red, vs. a soft milky yellow, black vs. buff) but fused geometrically, with most patterns skimming horizontally across the body and looks being led from top to bottom with the boldest of accessories beginning at the neck.

Although the garments themselves are fairly streamlined, Gill and Adams’ explorative spirit shines through in their experimentation with volume and shape. Notably in the incredible collar necklaces with their feather extensions, but also in the diaphanous expanses of fabric which often extended out from gowns and cocktail dresses — both elements of which infuse each look with inimitable confidence. The tailoring is exquisite, and the way that the female form is accentuated through the patterning of color and shape and its movement along the body is at once both very sensual and utterly chic.

This collection is exciting for many reasons, but mostly because it reflects the fresh vision of two women who are committed to infusing the fashion industry with their forward ideas and commitment to excellent design. Obviously the rest of the industry is taking notice and we should all be thankful, because Gill and Adams clearly possess the refined, yet unrepressed vision that fashion so desperately needs right now.
