Summary: Spring ’12 for Rachel Roy was all about exploring the differences –and similarities – between masculine and feminine shapes. Roy seemed to start with a stark black and white palette, two universally unisex colors, and slowly incorporate colors until pastels dominated the collection. Suiting was a prevalent theme throughout the line, seen in the meticulous tailoring of trousers and vests. Yet the overall look was softened with the more feminine maxi dresses, trenches and silk blouses. Having seen quite a few floral prints at this point in the week, I enjoyed Roy’s take on the ubiquitous springtime print. It reminded me of Lichtenstein-ian graphic novel with it’s prevalent black and white motif and punctuations of bold color.
Other favorites in the lineup included the tuxedo jackets in jet black and natural white, the herringbone organza shorts and the modern suiting slouch pants – basically, all the men’s wear inspired look were my favorite in their innovation. The classically feminine pieces, while beautiful and resplendent with Roy’s signature use of draping, were a little less fresh, the exception being her blue and green color block maxi dress with a lacquered leather belt which was to die for.
