Jane Lynch hosted the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards

The 2011 Primetime Emmy Awards was a winner in our book. Not only did the host rock, (I think Jane Lynch did a superb job her first time on stage at such a big event. Her comedic timing is impeccable), but the clothes did, too.  There was red, cobalt blue, sparkles,  texture and everything in between.  And while I can’t say everyone’s gown choice was a success, kudos to our celebs for giving us a peek at the trends for the upcoming awards season, as well as taking a few risks and choosing what they know and love. That includes choices in the designer category.  There were 2 Christian Sirianos, 2 Marchesas, 2 Oscar de la Rentas, and 3 Elie Saabs on the red carpet.  Celebs know what they like and stick to it!

Before we get into some of the trends, and what the celebs know and love, let’s take a look at some of the more unusual gowns seen at the main event. Not every gown is a winner, but it’s nice to see celebs taking risks in color, texture, and fabric.

The Unique

Heidi Klum in Christian Siriano

Why haven’t more celebs tried this? Probably because mini dresses at awards shows usually don’t work. But somehow this dress by Christian Siriano, which is a mix between a gown and a mini frock looks stunning on Project Runway’s Heidi Klum and there’s something so excellent about how the hemline poofs so that it looks dramatic but also fun.

Amy Poehler in Peter Som

We know comedic actresses can’t always dress, but stars like Amy Poehler and Tina Fey have gotten a whole lot better at putting their wardrobe together and highlighting their unique features rather than focusing on the fact they’re not model beautiful.  Take this Peter Som dress from the Fall 2011 collection.  The color is stunning on Amy’s white skin and we like that she chose a dress with short sleeves. She looks so comfortable…and so pretty!

Olivia Munn in Carolina Herrera

Kudos to Olivia Munn for choosing Carolina Herrera. I’m actually quiet surprised more celebrities didn’t choose her as Carolina always makes debonair, ladylike dresses that look great on just about everyone.  At the same time, I’m a little surprised that Olivia chose a green one, though it does look great against her darker skin.  This is a look from Carolina’s Spring 2012 collection which just passed and included a lot of bolder, lighter colors then we’re used to seeing from the designer like yellow and green.

Gwyneth Paltrow in Emilio Pucci

We don’t always agree with Gwyneth’s fashion choices, but she certainly made an impact here.  And we’re guessing that’s what she was going for.

Jenna Ushkowitz

I’m not even sure who designed this dress, but I love its architectural bustier at the top.

Claire Danes in Oscar de la Renta

Julie Bowen in Oscar de la Renta

It’s so interesting how the two Oscar de la Renta dresses worn by Claire Danes and Julie Bowen are so different from one another in everything including the color, the style of the top half, the way it sits on their frames.  We just love the way Oscar knows how to tailor a dress perfectly for the female silhouette.

Jessica Pare

Hating the feathery bottom and loving the top! It’s similar to this dress worn by…

Ellie Kemper

Emily Blunt in Elie Saab Couture

Emily Blunt wore a tulle midnight blue gown that included sequins and tulle ruffle add-ons as well as a floral applique.  She was one of three people to wear Elie Saab. She was also one of at least two that wore midnight blue.  A new trend perhaps?

Julianna Margulies in Armani Prive

Julianne outdoes herself, wearing a stunning white Armani Prive dress with a crescent bustier and transparent oval stones that from afar almost make it look like there are holes in the corset.  She works it though, and it’s glam.

The Beautiful

Some of these dresses were unique. Some were just gorgeous. These celebs stood out but more for their beautiful choices than making a statement.

Christine Baranski in Zac Posen

Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang

Evan Rachel Wood in Elie Saab Couture

Kelly Osbourne

Julia Stiles in Georges Hobeika

Sarah Hyland in Christian Siriano

The Red

Va-va-voom! Red was a trend at the Primtime Emmys and these ladies made sure everyone knew it! Never knew so many celebs had an affinity for one color!

Nina Dobrev in Donna Karan

Adrianne Palicki

Kate Winslet in Elie Saab

Lea Michele in Marchesa

Giuliana Rancic

Kerry Washington in Zuhair Murad

The Blue

Funny enough, the three ladies below all wore the same color blue! Not navy, not royal, but bright and beautiful cobalt!

Randee Heller

Dianna Agron in Roksanda Ilincic

Katie Holmes in Calvin Klein Collection

The Beaded

The ladies below wore cream, silver, champagne or white dresses that stood out because of the texture and the beading on the dress. And they all looked quite glamorous!

Christina Hendricks in Johanna Johnson

Elisabeth Moss in Marchesa

Jennifer Carpenter in Tony Ward

Cat Deeley in Monique Lhuillier

Maria Bello in Kaufman Franco

Rachael Taylor in Giorgio Armani
