Go ahead, laugh all you want. But I still have a special affinity for those furry (and surprisingly witty) creatures that I dedicated so many hours to as a child. Before I moved to New York a few weeks ago, (Hey everyone! I’m in New York!) I even went to an appropriately fitting screening of “Muppets Take Manahttan” at Chicago’s vintage chic Music Box Theater. Now that I’m here, I can still find that precious bit of childhood whimsy in the new Muppets X OC collection.
For those of us who refuse to take ourselves too seriously in fashion, this Opening Ceremony collaboration is equal parts irony and fun. New York Magazine calls it “practical” compared to Opening Ceremony’s last tip of the hat to furry creatures, the monsters from “Where The Wild Things Are.” Where that collection was designed to make people resemble a furry creatures themselves, the Muppets X OC line is still normal clothing that just celebrates the awesomeness that is Kermit, Piggy, Gonzo, Scooter, Beeker, etc.
The collection ranges from $45 for a tee shirt to $230 for a sweater, each with a different choice of your favorite Muppet walking, waving or both and dressed in cool rocker/hipster attire. But my personal favorite item would have to be the Dress Stripe Shirt for $180, a simple striped button down with tiny circles covering it, which, upon closer inspection, turn out to be the tiny faces of Gonzo, Animal or Kermit. Genius! Talk about a funkier (and decidedly cooler) alternative to the palm trees and martini glasses that cover the clothing from Vineyard Vines.
The Muppets X OC collection is available now at openingceremony.com.
