Really it was only a matter of time. I mean, if Project Runway and Real Housewives can create global celebrities from a single show, shouldn’t the blood, sweat and tears of renown CFDA designers be glorified on the small screen as well? That’s what Vogue.com aims to do with their new video series, The Fund. The premise involves following around emerging design talent as they vy for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, the prize that will affix them as a solid piece of the fashion design community.
The series will take a closer look at both the designers and the competition itself – what goes into the application process, how each designers prepares their collection, how the winner is picked, etc. Episode one is already live and features winners of past Fashion Funds, who have gone on to become ubiquitous names in he fashion world, Alex Wang and Jack and Lazaro of Proenza Schouler. From Fund veterans to novices, the story continues onto the new class of applicants as they ready themselves for the long road to the gold.
I personally applaud Vogue.com for taking an informative yet sparing look at a truly interesting facet of the design world. In a somewhat over saturated videosphere, this web series replaces the typical formula of spectacle and drama with talent and truth. And you can’t help but appreciate that.
