The beginning of the holiday season events started off with a bang on Monday evening. Guests were dressed in black and white at TOCCO Ristorante to celebrate and honor local photographers including Amie Hana, Dean Reid, Rashied Matthews and Chicago’s very own talented Steve Starr, among others. Starr, his peers and friends cover social, fashion and society events. Steve also covers celebrity and movie stars. During the event models wearing gowns by Anna Fong, Borris Powell, Elda De la Rosa, and Karol Barrero graced the crowd while Tocco’s specialty pizza and hors d’oeuvres were served.
Starr explained, “PIC, an acronym for Photographers in Chicago, was created by me and photographer friend Javier Enriquez this year. We are going to launch a magazine named PIC which is our trademark. We also decided to use the name PIC as a compliment or a Holiday Party for Photographers chaired by the Red Carpet Concierge Committee, of which Enriquez was managing director.”
When I asked who has inspired Starr the most, he replied, “No one person has inspired me most, but I certainly have always been enthralled by the famous Hollywood glamor photographers like George Hurrell and Clarence Bull, and of course Chicago’s Victor Skrebneski, who, by the way, photographed ME…some decades ago!” He’s still young at heart!
Starr told me “Among the best advice I ever received… one is to put friends, people and clients first and if you need money, it will follow. Another piece of advice was: Do not do art or create it for financial reasons alone…do it for the sake of the art and have integrity.” Pick up a copy of the December issue of Michigan Avenue magazine to see a photo of Starr in action.
