Topshop’s Tax Trouble
Six members of UK Uncut, a British organization that opposes the U.K. government’s spending cuts, were arrested after they staged a small protest at Topshop’s flagship store on London’s Oxford Street Saturday. A spokesman for London’s Metropolitan Police said that the six people were arrested for aggravated trespass. The protesters had taken to the store to voice their disapproval of Topshop owner Sir Philip Green’s tax status. While Green and his wife are residents of Monaco, Arcadia Group, Topshop’s parent company, is registered and pays taxes in the U.K. The group, which targets companies that it perceives as avoiding taxes, also protested outside a Vodafone store in central London Saturday.
