Tuesday marked the official debut of Karl Lagerfeld’s exclusive capsule collection for luxury e-retailer, Net-a-Porter. To celebrate the launch, five pop-up Window Shops were unveiled around the globe in Paris, New York, London, Berlin and Sydney. Alongside the launch activity at the pop-up window shops, a special event was held in Place Saint-Germain-des-Pres, Paris where a mysterious cube that appeared on Friday January 20 was officially opened by Lagerfeld himself to kick off the festivities.
At each Window Shops, visitors used the NET-A-PORTER KARL app, powered by Aurasma, to scan, shop and win pieces from the collection. We decided to stop by the party in New York, held at 375 Bleecker Street in the West Village. We waited patiently in the crowd that had gathered, both guests of the event as curious passerby, and watched as a black curtain that was affixed over the window, ceremoniously dropped and officially opened the Window Shop. Helpful staff bundled up in jackets that sported the phrase, TEAM KARL on the back, assisted people with scanning the images displayed on the windows on their ipads and iphones. Every once in a while an excited yell would erupt from the crowd as someone won an item from the collection from their scans.
Overall, it was a very innovative to create a tangible way for customers to shop a collection that’s exclusively online. We would have liked to have seen the actual pieces, but were happy enough to walk away with one of the KARL tote bags and t-shirts.
