Rachel Roy has created a separate designer line called (simply) “Rachel Roy” for her new footwear collection. Separate from her Rachel Rachel Roy diffusion line from Macy’s, this shoe collection will be the right balance of strong and sexy with a classic twist. “I don’t want shoes unless they are strong and sexy. I don’t want them to be just strong or just sexy,” offered Roy. “My collection is just that — strong and sexy. It represents the woman I want to be.”
Roy’s fall shoe collection will range from just less than $200 to $600 and include about 30 styles. The collection is set to hit stores in August.
CFDA Make Some Moves
The Council of Fashion Designers of America has done a lot to try to preserve the Garment District’s fashion culture and future with programs like the CFDA Fashion Incubator and the “Made in Midtown” study. But its next move, however, is almost definitely going to stir up a hefty dose of controversy: The CFDA itself is leaving the Garment District.
On Friday, the organization signed a lease for a 9,310-square-foot office space at 65 Bleecker Street — the landmark Bayard-Condict Building located between Broadway and Lafayette Street and designed by Chicago architect Louis Sullivan. The move, from 1412 Broadway where the CFDA has been located for more than 15 years, is expected to take place this summer, though an exact move-in date is still being determined.
“When we went on that hunt, we were sensitive to neighborhoods,” said Steven Kolb, the chief executive officer of the CFDA. “Our intention was to look heavily here, and we considered buildings in the Garment District significantly in our search. The criteria by which we were finding space was ultimately based not on neighborhood, but what the best space for a functioning office for the CFDA was.”
Fern Mallis’s New QVC Line
She’s spent the last nine years at IMG Worldwide until 2010 overseeing Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, but now Fern Mallis has a new endeavor. Mallis will be selling a new line of jewelry on QVC. “For me, more is more,” Mallis said. “I’m always wearing multiple necklaces and multiple bracelets. I’m a shopper.” “It’s kind of this handcrafted look,” said Lisa Morrisey, vice president of fashion merchandising at QVC. “The one-of-a-kind pieces give it this exotic feel. What’s wonderful about this product is, this is Fern. This is how Fern wears her fashion jewelry.”
Prices range from $35 to $79, although QVC hasn’t set the prices for specific items yet. Expensive fine jewelry that Mallis will buy in India and South Africa will be reproduced or adapted for Fern’s Finds and the backstories of how and where she found the pieces will be used as a selling point on QVC. Fern’s Finds will debut during QVC’s live remote coverage of New York Fashion Week.
