If you’re not already part of the cult following of Yves Saint Laurent’s beauty, get ready to be converted. The prestige beauty brand has just launched their first hybrid lipcolor of lipstick, gloss and stain. With the somewhat challenging moniker, Rouge Pur Couture Vernis à Lèvres (a play on words from the French phrase for nail polish), the lipcolor line has as many word in it’s title as it does functions.
The secret in the sauce is Vernis à Lèvres’ formula containing what YSL executives call “Lifeproof Color Emulsion.” It gives a “real nude texture, and at the same time you have lasting color and this new shine that is unique,” Nathalie Durán, YSL Perfumes and Beauty’s deputy managing director, told WWD. Instead of the standard brush shape, the applicator resembles a small spatula for a more precise application. The only thing that;s not completely new in the line is the palette of colors: YSL’s tried and true favorites such as fuchsia, red and orange are all accounted for in the line.
YSL came up with the idea for Vernis à Lèvres to increase their standing in the gloss market. Currently in the gloss category, YSL ranks third in France, sixth in the U.K. and seventh in Spain but Duran hopes Vernis à Lèvres will change all that. “We aim to go number one with this launch,” she said.
Heard enough and ready to try? Luckily, the Rouge Pur Couture Vernis à Lèvres is already available on Sephora.com, and retails for $32. Not a bad price to pay to become part of a cult following. Trust us, it’s worth it.
