New York Fashion Week Fall ’12. Costello Tagliapietra’s Modern Retro Fusion

February 9, 2012 • Fashion Blog, Fashion Shows, New York Fashion Week Fall '12

Summary: There is a rhythm to Jeffrey Costello and Roberto Tagliapietra‘s work that is consistent and refreshing from season to season. Their signature use of the impressionistic Airdye print is always patterned across chic, tailored dresses that embody a spirit of effortless (yet glamorous) femininity. This season, although their looks remained generally clean-lined, their garments were imbued with the mastery of expert draping and a finely tuned sensibility of subtle asymmetry, allowing their dresses and blouses to melt down the runway with liquid ease.

For Fall, Costello and Tagliapietra played with a retro element, both in color palette and shape. A nod to the 70s resonates in hues of acidic and sea green, oxblood, and orange-tinged browns. The collection’s foundation of chic dresses in differentiating lengths and biases (although variations on the wrap dress reigned supreme) was accented by more youthful, playful homages to the jumpsuit: especially in a matching burgundy, oxblood and slate one-shoulder top and leggings look, styled with a hooded cape.

Their ability to diversify their signature is what makes their collections consistently strong. Their attentive and glorified use of print, paired with their ever-intuitive manipulation of fabric, shape and form, keeps their aesthetic fresh, energetic and timeless. As a result of their attention to and accentuation of the body through slight, yet detailed, maneuvers in design, there is a look in this collection for every woman. Once again, Costello Tagliapietra is a standout moment for Fashion Week.
