Summary: Funny that Rebecca Minkoff’s inspiration for her Fall ’12 collection involves women who have “moxie, and “a hard won-won freedom of self-expression.” Judging from the journey Minkoff herself has had since starting her line in 2007, especially the growth she’s seen in the last couple years, she can go ahead and name herself as one of her own muses. Minkoff’s progress through the ranks of Lincoln Center must be record-breaking, starting out as a presentation designer a scant four seasons ago. From there, she rose to one of the smaller stages and received critical acclaim for her first collection of apparel and shows. Fast forward six months and Minkoff’ show is all of a sudden a media frenzy and house so packed we actually had to sharpen our elbows a little to get a good view of the goods. How’s that for a Woman of the Moment?
The collection itself was a celebration of this newfound confidence and comfort in the space she’s in as a designer. Having made her mark in the handbag market, Minkoff has slid seamlessly over to innovative apparel. Her first look containing sequined palazzo pants seemed an appropriate opener to a collection that was decidedly playful and fresh, (so much so that it had it’s own soundtrack thanks to the live musical stylings of rapper Theophilus London). Off hand pairings in both color and texture were the name of the game as bright saffron and orange were paired with heavy furs, black and brocade. Minkoff’s signature tough-but-still-fun girl aesthetic was apparent in the leather biker jackets, metallic suits and cropped ankle pants. And with all the digital prints being splashed across fabrics this season, we have to say we were a fan of her cobalt blue, space dyes knits. Overall, it’s hard to dislike a collection when you like the designer so much. And when you feel like you’ve gotten to know her through a career that may still be young, but has already become meaningful for so many. Us included. Oh, and not to mention the fact that she did all this with a brand new baby at home.
