Summary: Yigal Azrouel‘s notes indicated that his Fall ’12 collection “conjures the spirit of Francoise Hardy — a public figure with a private persona. Possessing an effortless elegance and casual refinement, the Yigal Azrouel woman plays with the duality of masculine and feminine, public versus private, strength and sensitivity. She is fearless in her outlook and queit in her confidence. Her ethos: I live; therefore, I am.”
From the moment the first model stepped onto the runway in baby blue, high-waisted, ankle-length trousers, a black leather top, slate grey blazer (draped over the shoulders), long, carefree locks and mirror reflective aviators, it was clear that the Yigal Azrouel woman had a distinct presence. I couldn’t stop thinking about her being the ideal “editor-in-chief” — effortlessly cool, setting trends and a standard for chic merely by existing.
In Yigal’s case, the styling and cut of the clothing in this collection were the standout features of his overall aesthetic for fall. There was movement in the garments, a looseness that every busy, jet-setting, working woman desires in her wardrobe: uncomplicated comfort that spares no expense in luxury. The overall silhouette was long: knit dresses and cardigans that stretched down to the calves, coats that engulfed the body in splendorous cocoons of outerwear. Fur was everywhere and gloriously exaggerated in its proportions. Luxe fur hats with oversized ear flaps complemented leather dresses and sheer maxis alike, paired with other accessories such as thick banded metal chokers and slouchy, elbow-high python gloves.
The juxtaposition of textures and styling, combined with the collection’s severe, confident allure is the product of a designer who clearly has respect for women. Luxury is a delicacy, and Yigal Azrouel’s Fall ’12 collection reminds us how satisfying that is.
