New York Fashion Week Fall ’12. Sally LaPointe’s “The Metamorphosis”

February 11, 2012 • Fashion Blog, Fashion Shows, New York Fashion Week Fall '12

Summary: The inspiration for Sally LaPointe’s Fall/Winter 2012 collection was from the short story “The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka. As one know, the story follows a man George Samsa as he wakes up and finds out that he has been transformed into a giant insect. It follows him through his process of isolation and neglect, which consequently leads him to his early death. The show follows the narrative of his transformation and the adverse effects that follow him.

Walking into the hall, the first thing you notice was the burnt orange lighting and the hallway fixed with hanging light bulbs. Upon entering the room, you could then see the olive green and orange sponge painted walls. As well, the entire hall was covered in a slight white fog. It had the feel of what it might be like living in a sewer for quite some time.

One could see that each of the models went through their own individual transformation by just looking at the clothing. Just as in the show itself, the color palette went from a light ivory and oatmeal variety to dark green to a very dense black. The color of the metamorphosis transformation was a simple combination of the sienna orange, olive green and black, which played nicely against the fog and coloring of the room.

The pieces did have a hard and soft feel, one of LaPointe’s trademarks. The capes and coats had a heavy feel, almost like the shell or armor of a bug. Underneath, chiffon and cashmere played off of the heaviness of the outerwear pieces. Near the end, it seems as if the Samsa had accepted his fate and what we see in the models were beautiful lace dresses. Of the collection, these will probably have the most selling power. But as a whole, the journey of the clothes had the most depth and backstory than I have seen of any show this fall.
