Summary: Miss Havisham, Effie Trinket, Audrey Hepburn, Mildred Pierce and other icons with ubiquitous style (I know — I threw a Hunger Games reference in there, but just go with it) all play a role in Benz’s homage to uber-draped, highly costumed glam goddesses of the past. Saturated in color, texture, sheer hose, bouffant wigs, dramatic eyes and pillbox hats, Chris Benz’s AW12 collection is a vivid whirlwind of contemporized vintage style.
Wide-legged pants in brightly checked red, green and white prints were paired with slouchy blouses in the same palette, but competing patterns. An A-lined pencil skirt in bright green speaks to the nostalgia of the 50s when paired with a mint twinset and patent green heels. Even the 20s make an appearance, in a color-blocked shift of pale pink, red and burgundy with an oversized bow at the neck that could only signify a woman ready for a fabulous fete.
Benz gave a brilliant boost to some of history’s most revered styles, building the skirts of tea-length cocktail dresses out and texturing them with diverse proportions, or infusing a simple sheath gown with a wash of ruby paillettes. But more than anything, Benz imbued this collection with the humor, wit and charm of someone who knows how to have fun and is comfortable erring on the side of the outrageous. Playful, and of the moment, these are pieces to make any look any look stand out.
