An uninspiring window display currently at Urban Outfitters
When I read in the NY Post yesterday that Urban Outfitters stock fell 5.3% in after-hours trading after fourth-quarter earnings missed Wall Street estimates, I was not surprised. Every time I walk by the Urban Outfitters near my son’s school I look at the window display and shake my head. The are continuously some of the worst displays I have ever seen. Mind you, I understand Urban Outfitters is not a store I should be frequenting anyway. It has been a long time since I was a 16 year-old girl, but even so the store seems painfully off-trend. So again, I was not shocked to read net income in the three months ended Jan. 31 fell 48%! Apparently even teenage girls don’t want to wear that crap.
So yesterday I took a peak inside the store:
Who wears short shorts?
Who wears this crap?
What I saw was cheap and wrinkled, ugly apparel. Short shorts, ripped t-shirts with fringe and other items that at the very least should have been steamed. What has always confused me about Urban Outfitters is the pricing. It seems very high for the quality. Well according to the CEO Richard Hayne, that has recently changed. “Our rate of full-priced selling has improved from fourth-quarter levels as we seek to re-establish our historic full-price selling penetration.” But will that help? Their problem is lack of taste. Improve that and maybe we will let our teenage daughters shop there again.
