If you want to venture outside of Chicago for a great meal or cocktails and appetizers, a brand new restaurant ‘Bakersfield‘ just off Route 83 on Ogden in Westmont is worth the trip. The atmosphere is roomy and modern, with two large bars with sleek marble countertops and an outdoor patio. In the center of the open kitchen you could see chefs busy at work at a wood-fired grill.
I had the opportunity to bring my boyfriend Rich with me to Bakersfield and try anything we wanted on the menu! First we sampled one of their signature cocktails, The Pamplemousse, a shaken drink of Tequila Avion, Rene Combier Grapefruit, and lime. I am not a huge fan of grapefruit, but the grapefruit was what made this drink into a delicious and smooth version of a margarita.
Next we split the Smoked Salmon appetizer. This was a huge piece of salmon served with light bagel chips and a dill sauce. I can easily see this dish becoming a favorite among fashionistas. A cocktail and just splitting this ample appetizer would have left me satisfied.
However, the hostess informed us the steaks and seafood prepared on the grill are all amazing, so we just had to try a grilled steak. Our server recommended the Cajun Ribeye, and Rich choose the Five-Spice-Rubbed Rotisserie Chicken Demi-glace, with an extra side of Red Bliss Mashed Potatoes. Both entries were delicious and served with large sides. My hand-cut fries were to die for, and Rich’s entry came with a wild rice salad that included corn and citrusy flavors. I want the recipe! The flavors from the rubs were spicy but not overbearing, and the wood grilling made the meats tender.
Was there room for dessert? The Fried Oreos or the Double Nut Brownie sounded amazing, but we were more than satisfied. Everyone was leaving the place with little brown carry-out boxes because the portions were so generous. And the prices were a bit more reasonable than in the city. Bakersfield is well worth the trip for fresh, grilled comfort food and cocktails!
