Spring/Summer 2012 Trend Alert: How To Wear Neon & NOT Look 17 Again.

“Get into the groove, boy you gotta prove your love to me…” Sorry about that. Vintage Madonna pops into my head when I think back to the early 80’s (as do Duran Duran, The Go-Go’s, and all things New Wave). I wore everything from pastels, to Flashdance sweatshirts, to massive shoulder pads to the most fluorescent of neons. I thought I was hot stuff, but the photographic evidence proves otherwise. So I am both elated and terrified that neons are back with a vengeance this spring. I was loving the extreme pops of color on the Spring 2012 RTW runways of Nanette Lepore, DVF, Michael Kors, Peter Som, Jason Wu, Rodarte, Ruffian, Rebecca Minkoff and Sass & Bide to name a handful. Yet, I immediately thought, “how do can I, a woman over 30, incorporate neon into my spring wardrobe and not look ridiculous?”

By now we have all heard the advice “if you wore it the first time around, you shouldn’t the second.” To that I say bullcrap. You can still embrace neon, as long as you do it tastefully and sparingly. Thankfully this season, designers are offering more refined options to wearing the trend. If worn the wrong way or from head-to-toe, you run the risk of looking like a fashion victim. The bright color can also have an aging effect, showcasing the fine lines we might be desperately trying to hide. So remember to keep it sophisticated and accentuate neon with a light hand. Think about a neon pump, clutch, cuff, or a full-on neon dress paired with basic black accessories.

Here are 10 neon items we would love to add to our wardrobes with just the right amount of ‘pop’:

1. Roberto Cavalli Neon Python Snake-clasp Clutch, $1850

2. Diane von Furstenberg Shizuka Ruffled Silk Dress, $445

3. Christian Louboutin Pigalle Neon Pump, $625

4. ASOS Perspex Clutch, $63.63

5. Brian Atwood Alima Neon Patent-Leather Pumps, $795

6. Michael Kors Slash Gown, 3,995 & Elastic Speedclip Belt, $250

7. A.L.C. Delilah Dress, $795

8. Michael Kors Stretch Wool-crepe Dress, $1595

9. Proenza Schouler PS1 Medium Python Shoulder Bag, $3,645

10. Diane von Furstenberg Haley Leather Wrap Belt, $175
