London is the host city of the 2012 Olympic Games and also the home city of Sassoon.
Sassoon began a long association with The Olympic Games since Vidal Sassoon created the famous wedge haircut for U.S. Figure Skater Dorothy Hamill in 1976. Her sculptural and fluid haircut moved freely and kept its shape as she spun on the ice. Sassoon was an innovator with his cutting techniques and freed women from high-maintenance hairstyles, not just for athletes but for all women. This is one of the accomplishments that the stylists at Sassoon Chicago told me they want people to remember about Vidal Sassoon.
For the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, Sassoon became the ‘official hair care consultant to the athletes’, creating a collection of cuts designed to complement each sport.
The history of women’s hairstyles, fashions and sports, notably in the 20s, are linked to the history of freedom for women, which is central to the Sassoon philosophy. It is fitting that for this Olympics year Sassoon International Creative Team introduced Athletica as their Spring/Summer 2012 Collection, a series of effortless, elegant and easy-to-maintain looks.
“We wanted to give a real athletic feel to the hair. The movement in the cuts is designed to give a sporty look – almost as if the hair has become beautifully disheveled after someone has completed their sporting activity,” says International Creative Director, Mark Hayes.
As for color, Sassoon delivers brilliant high definition colors this season, influenced by the symbol of the Olympics, the five interlocking rings and the gold, silver and bronze medals. The color is applied in concentric circles, enhancing the shape of a haircut.
With SS12 Athletica, Sassoon introduces flawless technique, high performance color and attention to detail. I’d call that a perfect 10!
