Spring/Summer 2012 Trend: High-Top Sneakers

Lord help me! I never thought at my age I would contemplate wearing, much less be writing about high-top sneakers. It was shocking enough that I recently wrote a post admitting that I sorta liked Ash Bowie Suede Wedge Sneakers (#2 above). Now here I am in a sea of high-top sneakers realizing that there are so many ways to go wrong with this type of footwear and that it is my civic duty to save any woman over the age of 30 with less than amazon-long model legs from a horrid fashion disaster and embarrassment. How on earth do you wear these? Good question.

As you will soon notice, there are two kinds of high-tops for women on the market right now. There are the flat ones (think Converse Chucks) and the hidden wedge version (look like they are trying to be high-heels). Well guess what? They are to be worn differently so you may need two pairs! Take note, here is how I would wear them. I would treat the flat version like flat boots or Oxfords. You can class them up with cropped pants and a blazer or try to earn some street cred by wearing them with your skinny jeans, a plain tee and a cross-body bag. If you are feeling particularly trendy, pair them with a varsity jacket.

The hidden wedge version (and the ones I prefer) is more like a high heel and the more feminine of the two. Now I would not wear wedge high-tops sneakers with a skirt or dress, but that’s me. I would wear them with jeans, a blazer, statement jewelry and a killer bag. Basically, I’d wear them as I would a pair of booties. That said, if you are thinking these seem more for fall than they are summer, we are in agreement. I plan to buy them soon in a darker color, but don’t expect to be wearing them much until early fall. No worries, they will still be in style. Yet, if you chose a canvas floral pair, those are surely for summer. Here are 10 pairs of high-tops we are loving right now:
