Get It Now: Pin It Up

June 18, 2012 • Get It Now, Magazine

Classic 1940s and ‘50s pin-up style has been a trend for quite a few seasons now, and its popularity shows no signs of waning anytime soon. While this look can be quite flattering and downright glamorous when done well, it can also veer into dangerously costume-y territory. It’s great for Halloween, but not so great on any given Saturday night, so here are foxy yet contemporary elements that are easy to incorporate into a modern wardrobe.

Swimwear: Retro-style bikinis and one-pieces are the perfect way to start working this style into your wardrobe, and the silhouettes are uber-slimming on a variety of figures. This bronze swimsuit by Esther Williams Swimwear is refreshing with a somewhat innocent sex appeal and an unusual color.

Dresses: Traditionally feminine frocks with full skirts look up-to-date done in sleek stripes and paired with patent accessories. For instance, this striped dress with a dramatic neckline by Stop Staring wouldn’t be out of place in most offices, and the a-line shape nips in the waist, creating the fantastic hourglass figure that’s central to the pin-up look. Plus, you could always add a cardigan for a fifties sweater-girl look.

Capris: High-waisted capri pants have long been a staple of the pin-up wardrobe, and pairing them with espadrilles and a fitted tee is a contemporary answer to the traditional summer ensemble. This bright red vintage-look pair by Steady is an ideal choice for experimenting with a bold statement – just add a black tee and strappy wedges in black or a bold turquoise, and you’re good to go. Flower in the hair and black liquid eyeliner optional.

Sailor Shorts: The appearance of having legs for days is one of the eternal tropes of pin-up style, and a pair of sailor shorts teamed with wedges is one of the easiest ways to make that look work for you. Combine these navy shorts by Lucca Couture with a simple red blouse and natural-hued shoes, and you’re ready for your close-up.

Red Lipstick: The perfect shade of red lipstick is about as personal as your fingerprints, but there is no denying the fact that bright cherry red lips are essential for this look. That said, Nars Jungle Red is a great shade that’s just slightly cool-toned, making it ideal for a variety of complexions – so it’s a good place to start while you search for your perfect match.
