So I had lost (for a few weeks) and then found my beloved Laura Mercier camouflage pencil. I cried actual tears. I don’t use it every day, but it makes me feel secure knowing it is always in my makeup bag….just in case. If memory serves I acquired this little godsend of a cover-up for our first Second City Style Beauty Olympics back in 2006. It comes with its own sharpener in the cap and covers like no other cover-up I have used before. Just rub a little of the pencil over a blemish or age spot and it simply disappears like magic. I have no idea what it is named anymore as all of the pertinent information (like the brand name) has long worn off.
Since it is getting close to being nothing more than a nub now, I thought it was time to get a new one before I started traveling this summer. God forbid I lost another one. Last Friday I had to be near Bloomingdale’s for an appointment anyway, so I thought I would pop in and quickly purchase one. For some reason I totally spaced and first went to the Bobbi Brown counter. After I described the pencil, and the two salespeople looked at me like I had two heads, I realized I was at the wrong counter. Embarrassed I sought out the Laura Mercier counter.
“I’m looking for the camouflage pencil.” “The what?” the salesperson responded. “We have this camouflage stick, but I don’t know what you mean by pencil.” So I took the nub out of my makeup bag and showed it to the guy. Another makeup artist/sales person overheard our conversation and my exasperation and looked at my stick. “Oh. We stopped making that over a year ago.” With my jaw open I think I said, “say what? WHY? This thing is BRILLIANT! How could you stop making this?” At this point I was getting a little loud. It was hard to tell with all the blood rushing to my ears. I was pissed and almost shaking. “Does anybody make something like this?” I cried.” “I think Benefit makes something like that. The counter is over there.”
Now I really didn’t want to go over to Benefit, but desperate and upset I did. Well guess what? They don’t make theirs any more either! Is this a conspiracy? Why are all of these cosmetic companies now trying to push coverup balms and camouflage sticks on me? They are not the same thing! One is creamy and the other one? It’s perfection and covers without a trace or much need to blend.
So here I sit 4 days later on my vacation, still upset, and still guarding my nub of a Laura Mercier pencil with my life. What I am going to do when I run out is beyond me. Maybe one of these companies will get a clue and bring it back.
