There’s something about the end of summer that makes us crave a wardrobe update. Maybe it’s the memories of shopping for a back-to-school wardrobe, or maybe it is simply the anticipation of a chill in the air, fall layers and boots. Or maybe it is just the fall sales. Regardless, transitioning between breezy summer pieces and the autumn trends you are just dying to wear can look unstudied and fabulous – or it can look like you were that kid who melts in their new sweaters in September because she just couldn’t wait to break out the new outfits (We all knew that girl. Oh, who are we kidding – we were that girl). Here are our top five pieces that will bridge the seasonal gap in style:
Open Weaves – All the coziness of a sweater but none of the insulation, this Helmut Lang pullover in a creamy pullover can be layered all year round – over a tank in the summer and a tissue-weight long sleeve tee or turtleneck in the winter.
Ground Up – Wearing a pair of darker shoes in a fall material can be a good way to start the transition, especially if it is still scorching hot. These Valentino flats are bare enough to work with warm weather apparel, but the black patent and studs clearly would work with winter ensembles as well.
Switch Silhouettes – Even something as simple as swapping out your maxi dresses and flowy skirts for a tailored, ladylike silhouette can make you feel like you’ve sharpened up for fall (that back-to-school feeling again!). This red pencil dress from ASOS fits the bill perfectly.
Color Story – A lightweight skirt in an autumn shade like this draped jersey number from T by Alexander Wang is another excellent option when your mind says “autumn” but the thermometer reads “dog days of summer”.
Heavy Metal– There is something about chunky metal statement jewelry in dark hues that reads as a winter item no matter what the season, making a thick cuff like this gold and black piece from Fantasy Jewelry Box a fantastic way to toughen up a delicate summer dress.
Whether its already cooling off or the mercury is still climbing, there are plenty of ways to get that back-to-school feeling as a grown woman. And if this list doesn’t help, you can always order fancy stationary or office supplies!
