Summary: Tadashi Shoji took us on a virtual journey along the Modern Silk Road where East meets West. Using his travels as inspiration, his Spring 2013 collection we started in Venice where the blue embroidered-lace sheath dress paid tribute to a Venetian tablecloth the designer found. Yet even as Tadashi moved on to Kazakhstan through the Gobi dessert and Dunhuang, ending in Xi’an, it seems everywhere he traveled had lace. There was colorful lace, ikat lace, patchwork looking lace and well, every type of lace you could imagine. Some of frocks worked better than others. My favorites were the patchwork blues and greens and ikat-print dresses not to mention the lace shorts paired with long trapeze lace blouses were unexpected form the designer we normally think of for dresses and gowns. After the first 10 looks of solid lace came out I was thankful to see something different.
