Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring ’13: Mara Hoffman’s Fun Hawaiian Fiesta!

Summary: My Fashion Week started later than usual this season, with my show coverage starting on day three of the calendar. Already, fellow show-goers were bemoaning the distinct lack of color they had been seeing, fearing the future of spring was looking (pardon the pun) not too bright. Mara Hoffman’s cheerful  invitation, which welcomed guests with a festive ‘Aloha!’, seemed like a promising departure from the bland. And boy, did she deliver.

The show opened with an adorable trio of ukulele players, swaying to a non existent breeze (it felt like 100 degrees everywhere in the tents that day), and wordlessly inviting us to join then on a tropical getaway. Hoffman took care of the rest, serving up her usual summery staples in such a kaleidoscope of color we found ourselves unable to fully digest one look before devouring the next. Her oft-used Ikat and tribal prints splashed across maxi dresses and drop-waisted blouses. Neon color-blocking snaked it’s way down trousers and across corset tops. And the swimwear, cut into retro shapes with thick straps and high waists, popped playfully against the gleaming white backdrop of the runway. I especially loved the shoes by Aperlai — chunky platforms of tan and neon green — but the accessory that stole the show was clearly the palm leaf head pieces, fastened to each model like a hula girl and more strategically-placed accent than gimmick. All in all, it was much needed dose of technicolor for beige-weary guests and for me, it was a fun way to kick off the season. And as a fitting end to this Hawaiian soiree, the closing Caribbean tune of ‘Shake Senora’ (which always makes me think of Beetlejuice!) had us literally dancing out of the show.
