New York Fashion Week Spring ’13: Christian Siriano’s Pretty Little Pirouette

Summary: Funny how, for the collection Christian Siriano is already being lauded as his most grown up and sophisticated, he gleaned inspiration from every little’s girl’s dream: to be a ballerina. The original Project Runway winner stated his muses as both, “the whimsical movement of the ballet” and “one of my favorite Degas paintings, Three Ballet Dancers“. He thus wanted a collection that resonated with romance, elegance and depth and, true to form, he presented a sweet melody of his usual suspects of chiffon, tulle and beaded applique gowns. Though it was his pared down separates that seemed to steal the show. Siriano has long been showing us his flare for the flamboyant, to all of our delight. But, as the judges remind contestants today on the show where he got his start, self-editing is crucially important as well. Wearability is what keeps clients coming back and Siriano proved he understands that now completely, with adeptly cut jackets, tops and trousers in delicate watercolor prints. The soft pink and baby blue palette, dappled with ivory and metallic golds, set a dream-like stage for the feathers and tiers of tulle to appear as if they were floating down the runway.

One thing a veteran of any Siriano show has to make sure to take note of is the shoes. Since designing his footwear collaboration with Payless Shoes, Siriano has always included the diffusion line in his runways shoes. This season’s collection reinforced the girlish femininity of a ballet slipper, fashioned into pointed-toe Mary Jane pumps, modern mules, and even a “ballerina oxford” style sneaker. The eclectic collection shoes, paired with the slightly messy top knots and round pearl studs, truly turned each runway model into a tiny dancer. Other highlights included the tailored menswear-inspired pieces like the metallic blue blazer (above) and of course, the ethereal quality that Siriano’s final gowns always seem to evoke. We’ll be eagerly awaiting this season’s encore.
