Summary: I was excited to see the first collection by Kara Laricks during New York Fashion Week at Runway@Pier75. This wide open warehouse right on a pier was the perfect backdrop for Kara Laricks, who made her mark with an artistically edgy masculine and feminine approach to fashion that lead her to win the first season of NBC’s “Fashion Star.” The reason Second City Style became hooked on this fashion competition show was because during every episode the designers were given the opportunity to sell a design to buyers from Macy’s, H&M and Saks Fifth Avenue stores. Then the items were online and for sale the same night of the show. Needless to say, Saks Fifth Avenue adored Kara Laricks and so did we! Not surprisingly, at her Spring 2013 presentation she showed many combinations of reconstructed menswear in black, but she included pops of bright orange and red tights. Kara’s ability to design edgy yet comfortable and flattering pieces for women are what make her a star. I found her menswear vest style shorts romper to be one of her most innovative pieces as well as her tuxedo shorts.
I had the opportunity to meet the designer at her presentation. She is her best model, as she was clad in her tuxedo tail shorts and a black jacket. I told her I loved her shorts and she pointed out the same version in white in the presentation. Just like on the show, she was sweet and gracious and thankful for my compliments. I told her we were rooting for her and wanted her to win the show from the start! She told me, “This is the first time that I am not designing for Saks or H&M and I am designing for myself!” As for her spring 2013 collection, “A woman can find quirky, original pieces with masculine verses feminine.” I told her “I want to jump right into one of your jumpsuits!” She replied “Thank you, you’re too sweet.” I asked her where we can find her collection next and she said, “Well, we’ll see after this!” I can’t wait and now look forward to seeing her collections years after year.
