Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring ’13: Carlos Miele’s Animal Magnetism.

Summary: With the 2012 London Olympics over, the world will soon ready itself for the next summer Games: Rio 2016. But with his Spring/Summer ’13  collection, Brazilian-born designer Carlos Miele  has already begun the celebratory embrace of his home culture. Named Hallucinatory Jungle, Miele’s lineup was a splendid cacophony of overlapping prints, lengths and colors. Animal markings that could be found in the murkiest depths of the Amazon splashed across filmy chiffon and silk charmeuse. Tiers of aqua-colored ruffles cascaded down gowns in a most Carnivale-esque fashion. And a lovely, if not slightly out of place, addition of beaded fringe traipsed and tasseled it’s way into the ranks.

Was it a spectacle? Yes? Was it enjoyable? Yes. Was it my favorite? Meh…..not really. Indeed, Miele’s cut and construction of his signature gowns was exquisite. The movement that he seemingly takes pains to incorporate into each piece needs to be acknowledged and appreciated. But for me, the collection too closely resembled the flashiness of Roberto Cavalli show. Miele’s MO is usually more pared down and elegant and perhaps because of this, I didn’t feel the same sense of ownership from Miele as I have with previous seasons. This is of course ironic since he was pulling so closely from his own heritage. Having said that, I can’t blame Miele for stepping outside the box a bit. After all, his run of show did note the collection would “suspend the imagination.” And in that regard, he definitely succeeded.
