New York Fashion Week Spring ’13: Jonathan Simkhai Hits Us With Some California Cool

September 10, 2012 • Fashion Blog, New York Fashion Week Spring '13

Summary: To me, there is something very cool about this collection by Jonathan Simkhai, inspired by Venice Beach skate parks in the seventies. I like the sunglasses, the easygoing styling, blithe color palette and simple, flowing shapes. Personally, I am not a fan of clothes that are super form-fitting. There is a structure to Simkhai’s garments, a boxiness, that I really appreciate – giving the overall shape of the look – as simple as it may be – an elevated sense of power and strength. This attitude also accommodates the collection’s more demure color palette – peach hues don’t seem as feminine on utility jackets and the structured shoulders of dresses as they may in other incarnations. I love the taffeta floral wide leg trousers and collared sheer shirt, and the leather pieces – an A-line dress, laser cut shorts and black jacket, to name a few  – are divine. I’m looking forward to seeing how Simkhai translates his California cool aesthetic for Fall. At 27, I’d say he’s definitely on the right track.
