Summary: Walking into the Spring/Summer 2013 presentation of Candela, it was very in-your-face of the designer’s inspiration. Designer Gabi Perezutti pieces had minimal range with a major emphasis on a 1970s-vintage feel. The Beatles and The Rolling Stones played in the background but the mood was a bit confusing while looking at certain pieces covered completely in sequins. Though the “free bird” symbol of peace was the focal point on the sequin-covered dress, it was ideas like these that looked just a bit too glitzy for the rest of the ready-to-wear collection.
Bold floral prints and gauzy fabrics ruled the collection. If nothing else, I thought the collection reminded more of items you would find at Free People but for much, much more expensive. Embroidered lace shorts, ribbon yarn and flirty sundresses were more of the feel for the capsule as well as a more bohemian effect. I did appreciate the utilitarian-chic beaded shirt and tiered silk chiffon maxi skirt which went a little out of the range while not going to far. Messy hair and twin braids with minimal makeup kept the collection charming but in turn, also made it more of a costume. I thought this was more of a bit of the lightweight departure than the capsule needed. It seemed a little more adorable cutesy than I would like but it good to see a definite point of view of bringing a modern edginess to a collection like this. There has to be a fine line between paying homage to a certain decade, keeping the look your own and not making it seem like these pieces just exist inside the realm of your local Halloween Outlet store. I think the pieces work as individuals but when they were all put together, it turned into a look you can already get straight out of your grandmother’s closet.
