Pakistan Factory Fire Leads to Changes

Safety standards in the global apparel industry are under the microscope again. After the tragic fire that killed nearly 300 workers at a garment factory, U.S based certification groups plan to roll out a fire safety program for Pakistan.

The fire took place at Ali Enterprises Inc., a jeans manufacturer based in Karachi, Pakistan. The fire happened last week leaving 289 workers dead. The incident lead to the resignation of the Sindh Minister for Industry, the arrest of the factory owners for attempted murder and brought attention to the monitoring companies used by hundreds of U.S. and European retailers. WRAP certified Ali Enterprises in 2007,2009 and 2010, but the company’s certification expired at the end of 2011 and was not renewed. Workers that survived said the employees had a difficult time escaping the building because the doors were locked.
