Get It Now: Denim In Prints, Patterns, And Foils, Oh My!

September 24, 2012 • Get It Now, Magazine

While for many of us, printed denim calls to mind the unspeakable horrors of the worst of the ‘80s, the skinny and patterned look is most definitely having a fashion moment this fall. Granted, there are still pairs we wouldn’t touch with a ten-inch stiletto, but there are also some diamonds in the rough that could be worn in beautifully avant-garde ways.

For instance, these grey-blue and black patterned J-Brands would make an ideal alternative to the typical jeans and a black tee outfit nearly all of us are guilty of wearing on lazy days. Just the fact that the jeans are pattern elevates the overall look. For nighttime, just switch to a foiled pair like these pewter Current Elliotts and you have the same easy comfort, but you look like you made a serious effort (especially if you do a quick smoky eye or rock burgundy lips, one of fall’s biggest make-up trends).

Waxed denim is also growing in popularity, and this can be a somewhat more flattering alternative to the still-popular liquid leggings. Done by Hudson in bright cobalt blue, a pair of these is the perfect modern pop of color that’s just as easy to wear as your standard skinny jeans.

If you want to channel your inner badass biker chick but aren’t a fan of leather, these metallic black Pierre Balmain coated python print skinny jeans would be a good place to start. Granted, these are a bit more difficult to pull off, but a slouchy white or grey tee for casual looks and a flowy silk blouse for dressier ensembles would likely work. Or go all out and rock a moto vest, boots and black eyeliner (you know you want to).

Last but not least, anyone who really wants a style challenge can try this deep blue and neon orange print pair by Roseanna. They certainly make a strong statement, and with the right pieces (perhaps a sharply tailored navy blazer and sleek ankle boots), it would be remarkable.

In general, something to keep in mind is that most of these looks are still advanced fashion – sometimes complicated to style, but when you pull it off the complete look is show-stopping.
