Second City Style’s Annual BCA Picks…That REALLY Give Back

October 3, 2012 • Fashion Blog, Shopping

Beginning every September for the past 8 years, I am inundated with Breast Cancer Awareness (BCA) pink product pitches, most of which make me cringe. Instead of enlightening me to great products that actually donate real money, most are clearly using the cause to sell products (pink washing) which just really pisses me off. I wade through the emails getting angrier and angrier and always vow “this will be the year we don’t do a Best-Of” and then I feel like an ogre.

But how do you and I know the cute pink products we buy are actually donating anything at all? I mean the best approach is the direct approach which in my opinion is donating actual dinero or hours to said charity. However, since you and I all by now know at least one person affected by breast cancer and you may have the need to show your solidarity, buy a gift for a survivor or just own something cute and pink, I have found and screened the following products to ensure that they donate at least 20% of proceeds to breast cancer charities…and ones we have heard of. Do your research. By not buying pink products that donate mere pennies and hitting these companies in their bottom line, maybe we can rid the world of pink washing, or at least my inbox.

So here are 20 BCA picks that are possibly worth your money. If you think 20 is a lot, you can only imagine how many we were pitched!
