Runway To Real Way: Metallics

October 15, 2012 • Magazine, Runway To Real Way

Summer is now long gone and the holidays have yet to come. So, what’s a fashionista to do in these limbo-like fall months when she wants a little razzle dazzle? Luckily, metallic pieces translate all year long! The only difference to donning the shimmering trend in the cold weather months is choosing longer lengths and thicker fabrics to provide all the coverage without sacrificing any wattage.

Metallics are no stranger to fall runways, and this season’s shows were no exception. One of the most glamorous houses in the industry, Badgley Mischka, chose to showcase their metallic pieces in shapes outside of the classic red carpet gown. Liquidy pajama pants were paired with kimono-like tops for a modern take on luxurious comfort. We fell in love with their take on the evening pajama pant and went on our own hunt to find an option for every day (or night). We found the perfect alternative with Markus Lupfer’s sequined pants, which resonated with the same gunmetal sheen and an elastic waistband and cuffs so the dance party can last all night long.

Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but gold looks good on everybody. Another signature red carpet label, Reem Acra, also sliced their shimmering swaths of fabric into more wearable pieces. A classic fall staple, the pencil skirt, when laden with chunky gold sequins can still get a lout of mileage out of any number of cocktail attire occasions. We love that Reem Acra paired the skirt with a simple tweed jacket to show off it’s versatility, so we dug in to find a similar style that would be worth it’s weight in, well, gold. This pleated, silk-blend number from Ports 1961 is as luxe as you can still get away with for day. The similar knee-length and subtle sheen makes this a runway-worthy piece that can take you from the office to date night.

How long could we discuss metallics without getting to the mother of all metallic pieces, the dress. Chances are you’ll be stockpiling these for the eventual slew of holiday parties, but who says there has to be snow on the ground for the silver bells to come out? A leader in standout and statement-making style, Naeem Khan, swathed his models in a metallic gowns so shining and intricate they resembled a beautiful body armor. Taking a cue from Khan, but dropping the inability to breathe, we set out to find a stunningly sterling metallic gown for pre-holiday events. With stylish long sleeves and an appropriately shirt skirt, the Dahlia dress by Karl is our answer to “textured” metallic without being ready for battle. Being a collection from the the Kaiser himself, Lagerfeld’s diffusion line still results in a pretty penny. But just think, this piece will last you literally all year long, for many years to come. Now that’s an investment.

And finally, what would a cold weather guide to metallics be without outerwear. We love the idea of a pop of panache compared to the often humdrum palette of the fall jacket spectrum. Riding the subway to work every morning in a sparkling parka may be a bit much, but a toned down bit of twinkle can turn out to be the best part of your ensemble. Pamella Roland, ever the innovator of sophisticated style, rained down glittering stalactites in the outerwear of her fall runway. Her coats were the centerpieces of her looks, making your jacket a piece you didn’t want to take off. We went looking for a piece that would shine as much indoors as out (without the heft of a bulky coat), and came out with this elegant tuxedo jacket by Moschino. Menswear-inspired and metallic, these two popular trends go perfectly hand in hand. Add a dose of shimmering, sizzling metallics to your fall wardrobe and see how quickly you warm up even the chilliest fall nights.
