Derek Lam At Neiman Marcus Michigan Avenue. My Dream Versus Reality

Derek Lam and Ken Downing present the SS’13 collection at the Arts Club of Chicago

We at Second City Style, we could not wait for Derek Lams visit to Neiman Marcus on Michigan Avenue for his spring 2013 trunk show on October 24th. The bonus was a fashion presentation at the modern and chic Arts Club of Chicago the evening before. We got to see the same fashion week runway collection hanging on racks where we could actually touch and feel the pieces. Then not only did we get to see the collection in a fashion presentation, but we also got to hear commentary from Derek Lam and Neiman Marcus Fashion Director, Ken Downing. When you see a presentations at New York Fashion Week, it is a 5-minute blur. Tuesday evening attendees  were privy to hear the thoughts and inspiration directly from the designer, along with the insightful and often hilarious comments of fashion expert Downing. The trunk show was on roll racks that night for shopping and tickest to the event benefited the Arts Club of Chicago. The next day, when I woke up, I knew the collection was back at Neiman Marcus, along with Derek Lam. I realized it wasn’t just a dream!

I rushed back to see the trunk show once again at Neiman Marcus Michigan Avenue. Along with other shoppers, I was excited to try on pieces from the collection, get the opinion of Derek Lam (himself!) and pre-order selections. I fell in love with many of the pieces that I saw on the runway and found out that the fit and intricate, yet simple design of each piece was fabulous. I think these pieces should become a permanent installation at the Arts Club of Chicago. If not there, perhaps in my own closet.

Cocktails before the Derek Lam SS’13 Collection Presentation

One of our favorite looks. Lightweight leather for all seasons. Shoes and bags are also by Derek Lam.

Derek Lam said he always has a trench in every collection.

Derek Lam said he did this jacket and skirt “like a 2-piece trench.”

Ken Downing told us stripes were all over the runways, and Derek Lam said he “Mixed up the stripes here – almost like an animal print.”

Derek Lam commented these pants are “an animal print that we are not sure what it is – if it is a giraffe or what kind of animal print.”

More of the leather trend from Derek Lam.

This dress was a hit with the crowd! It includes intricate laces and panels on the sides.

Derek Lam said he used crochet in this skirt, which makes it “more humble.” “More humble?” Ken Downing joked. A woman wearing this would certainly be noticed.

This dress looks like 2 pieces. Derek Lam mixes things up and plays with surprises.

I loved this top! Here Derek Lam mixed up prints fabrics and textures again.

This open weave dress has a patterned silk lining, which will be exclusive to Neiman Marcus. Other stores will have a black lining.

This metallic “sweatshirt” adds another surprise mix of dressy with casual. Derek Lam said he loves sportswear and incorporates it into his pieces. The skirt is made of a shiny cello that he cut up and twisted up to give this 3-d effect. Ken downing was quick to point out that the back of the skirt is plain knit, so yes you can sit down in it!

I got to meet Derek Lam after the show! He was sweet and warm to all of the guests.

The next day at the trunk show Derek Lam thought this was the dress for me!
