I am a real woman who has really used Rent the Runway, more than once. In case you did not already know about Rent the Runway, it’s a service that enables women to experience designer dresses/accessories at 10-15% of the retail price! You basically rent the dress for 4 or 8 days and then easily return it (just mail back in the included pre-paid envelope). The first time I tried it was after I had just had my first son and the site had just launched. I had a body I didn’t know, want or could fit into any of my clothes. So Rent the Runway made perfect sense. However, when they first launched they didn’t have much in a 10 or 12 which was sadly the size I was at that time. So I struck out, but don’t worry, they have those sizes now. They have to because they now boast 3 million members, carry over 160 high-end designers, have curated 30,000 of the season’s hottest dresses, and have over 4,000 accessories (jewelry, bags, etc.). What a difference a few years makes!
So last February I was asked to present at the Fashion 2.0 Awards right before New York Fashion Week and was in the middle of my ‘crazy diet’ in an effort to finally get the baby weight off after having my second child. Again, nothing was fitting right, but I didn’t want to go shopping just yet, so I thankfully remembered Rent the Runway. Mind you, it was last-minute and an almost desperate situation. Carol in Chicago helped me pick out a couple of options and they were delivered to my door by the time I got home from having my hair done later that afternoon. I wore a Badgley Mischka sequin dress and felt great! Then I just stuffed the dresses in in envelope the next day and continued on with my diet.
Just this past October I had a big high school Centennial event to attend. Think high school reunion only not just your class, but every class that ever attended the school. I was going to see people I had not seen since high school! So I wanted to look great, but really didn’t have time to shop for that special dress. So I thought, why not Rent the Runway again? No fuss, no muss and I could have the dresses delivered directly to my parent’s house and not have to pack formal wear with me for the trip from NYC. So again I picked the same dress I wore to the Fashion 2.0 Awards only in the gown version and thankfully in a smaller size! I felt very glamorous that evening and the dress was a complete success.
So now I have some holiday parties coming up and am planning to turn to Rent the Runway once again to get me through in style. Above are some of the dresses I am considering. Now I can either consider suggestions from personal stylists on the site or see what the dresses look like on real women by using their new “Women Like Me Tool.” I simply enter my height, bust size, dress size and age; and then I can view thousands of women with comparable shapes in dresses available for rent. Because let’s face it, not many of us look the the model pictured above. At least not in reality!
