Yesterday, WWD reported that handbags are catching up with shoes and to that I say….duh! While footwear might still drive the accessories category with respect to innovation when it comes to retail (sales), handbags are picking up steam.
Footwear might still drive the accessories category with respect to innovation, but in terms of retail, handbags are regaining momentum. Brands are saying there is a renewed interest in handbags. Really? Was there ever not?
Well shoes apparently were the accessories rage for the past 5 years with growth in brands like Christian Louboutin and Jimmy Choo and new designers like Charlotte Olympia and Nicholas Kirkwood. But now bags are back at a new luxury price point even though there has not been the equivalent name brand in handbags. Then again retailers have been making huge investments in massive shoe floors like at Saks (it has it’s own zip code!) and Macy’s has a whole floor dedicated to shoes too. Yet thankfully designer like Alexander Wang and Phillip Lim have added great new handbags at a $800-1000 sweet spot. Which is what designer bags coast BEFORE the recession! Color and bags for tech needs seem to have driven the uptick in demand.
I never gave up on you handbags. Never.
