The year was 1984 and her name was Carrie Bradshaw. Not quite the same Carrie that we know from Sex and the City, but a teenage version. A version who is struggling to find her place in the Big Apple as her experiences shape her into the well-known writer that we just can’t seem to get enough of.
The CW’s prequel to Sex and the City, titled the Carrie Diaries, is set to air on Monday, January 14 at 8 p.m. But how will the cult following of the original show respond to this new series? Although the show follows the early years of Carrie Bradshaw, it doesn’t seem to appeal to the same audience. Older fans of Sex and the City will most likely tune in for the pilot episode to see what it’s all about. They’ll want to see some of the experiences that made Carrie Bradshaw, well, Carrie Bradshaw, but I don’t see them sticking around for the long haul.
This show will attract a new audience. Think along the lines of a Gossip Girl-esque viewer. Late teens and early twenty-somethings who want to immerse themselves in the twists and turns of a strong female character who is growing into herself. The teen circle of friends that the young Bradshaw will introduce us to aren’t going to be like the Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda that we’re used to. It’ll be different and geared toward another demographic.
But the one constant will be the fashion. Regardless of how old Carrie is, there is no doubting her love of fashion. So, that will most definitely be included. Since the show takes place in the 80s, many of those fashions will be resurfacing not only on the screen but my guess is that they’ll make an appearance in stores as well. They’re nothing like channeling your favorite television character in your wardrobe. However, don’t be afraid. I foresee a more tasteful approach to the decade tainted by electric blue eyeshadow and shoulder pads.
