Just a week until the grand finale, our four Project Runway All Star designers compete against one another in the most important challenge of the season. The theme of the week is Haute Couture and Carolyn sends the designers to where better than Paris, France!
The designers begin their Parisian journey with a private tour of the House of Valentino lead by who else but the head designers themselves. After gaining insight on couture from the masters themselves the quad are invited to the Valentino couture show to see the work in action. Later that night, designers enjoy an evening dinner on the Sine. With less than 24 hours in Paris, designers start the next day by sketching in front of the Eiffel Tower and view the Valentino show with the likes of Joanna Coles, Anna Wintour, and Grace Coddington.
After the show it is back to the work room in New York to get started working on their looks. Looks set off with a rocky start as tired designers fight for inspiration. Uli has trouble getting her lining just right and Anthony Ryan actually throws his dress on the floor and starts again from scratch.
Joanna Coles makes her way around the room in support of the designers but at this point feels comfortable with what each designer is doing. After a model fitting and a dramatic make-over and hair transformation, the show is ready to begin.
This week’s guest judge is fashion designer Cynthia Rowley. All in all the designers did a successful job in creating their couture gowns while keeping with their design aesthetic. Emilio’s red gown was stunning but would have been better off if it was just short enough to show a bit of ankle. Anthony Ryan wins the challenge with his stunning black ball gown.
Joshua’s dress is very unique and as the judges put it, “an experiment.” Unfortunately, this “experiment” set back Joshua causing him to have a low score. Uli also took a low score for her lining, the zipper in the back, and for not going couture enough.
In an interesting twist of events, the judges decide that it would be too difficult to send a designer home based only off of the couture dress, so another challenge is given! Uli and Joshua had one hour on the runway to deconstruct their dresses and create an entirely new look. I can’t speak for the designers, but it would kill me to spend hours making a beautiful dress only to destroy it moments after it was finished! Nonetheless, designers did as they were told.
After the time allotment was up, judges returned to see what was created. Joshua turned his dress around the create a low cut lace top and took the hem of the floral skirt way up to create a more ready-to-wear look that showed the judges what his concept was about. Uli threw the lining in the judges face by creating a beautifully draped dress with the left overs and a fabulous gold jacket from her dress.
In the end, Joshua was sent home and Uli moves on to the finale!
