We are a few weeks out from New Years’s Resolution time and the maddening crowd at the gym is already starting to thin out. While the rest of the world clamors for the latest edition of the flu shot, folks in the fashion world are looking for a little something to boost their resolve. At this time of year, most of the world takes solace in the cold weather and the social acceptability of swathing yourself in furs and multiple layers of luxury fabrics. Fashion types know that January 15 is the time that spring/summer bathing suits start to arrive in boutiques and department stores. If you don’t snag the best suits by March, you’ll be left to troll the picked over racks later in the season. AND – What could boost your resolve to pursue physical fitness more than trying on a bathing suit in the dead of winter?
In July 2012, Miami played host to Mercedes Benz Swim Week. Fashion Editors were treated to the styles that designers had planned to offer for this upcoming summer season. I decided to pull up some of the most memorable styles and serve them up here as inspiration. Perhaps you’ll use them as a not-so-gentle reminder to stay on your fitness or diet regime. Personally, I use a refrigerator magnet with a photo of me on South Beach back when I was in peak Baywatch condition.
Mara Hoffman is well known for her relaxed Bohemian style and her swimwear carries that vibe to the beach. Any lingerie/swim editor will disavow you of the notion that bathing suits are as simple triangle top, bandeau and one piece. Today’s swimwear comes in an infinite array of variations on those themes. Hoffman’s bikini tops for Spring Summer 2013 feature beach to lunch (in a resort town) styling and tribal prints. They pair equally well with string bikini bottoms and your favorite pair of jeans.
Red Carter is best known for his cheeky swim designs and this year he brings Rio de Janiero to the beaches and pools of the rest of the world. While most swim designers carried through the black-and-white trend we saw in last spring’s ready to wear, Carter opted for a riot of color. Hit two resolutions in one by keeping your body bikini ready and wearing more color!
Ribbons and bows may be hallmarks of “ladylike” fashion like this season’s Valentino peep toe platoforms, but in swim, they translate as “girlie.” Nicolita rocked the runway with flirty designs that featured both accent bows on bottoms and fully functional bows on bandeau tops.
Whatever your resolutions for 2013, find inspiration to stick to them on the fashion and swimwear runways. Fashion always looks forward – and so should you – to a bright future!
