Screen Actors Guild Awards 2013: Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Julianne Moore, Jennifer Lawrence, Marion Cotillard, Nicole Kidman, Lea Michele and More

January 28, 2013 • Celebrity Style, Fashion Blog

The Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG Awards) is a fine moment for actors to recognize actors – and another fine moment for actors to recognize fashion. While the Golden Globes had some amazing fashion moments (and not so amazing fashion moments,) it’s always a hit and miss with the SAGs because some will look good and some won’t care so much – after all, it’s the SAGs, not the Oscars. Well, I’m happy to report it looks like the fashions at the Screen Actors Guild Awards are getting better and better every year! Not only were there some surprise fashion comebacks (Jessica Chastain, Kaley Cuoco) but there were also some high fashion that wasn’t even supposed to get the attention.

Here’s what I mean:

Stand Out Gowns

Jessica Pare in

Jessica Pare in Jason Wu

Jessica Pare wasn’t nominated. She was only there to support the cast of Mad Men as one of the ensemble. And yet, she had my vote for the best look of the evening, for so many reasons. Her hair and makeup were gorgeous, chic, and mod. The color of her gown was gorgeous. And it had both high fashion and sex appeal brought out with the straps, and the detail on the fabric of the dress.

Kaley Cuoco in

I’m not sure if Kaley Cuoco‘s red tea length stunner is the best of the evening, but it certainly is a lot better than her washed out look at the Golden Globes! Plus, her hair is down and it’s straight! Love the bangs but do not love the strange red velvet shoes.

Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen

Another major comeback – Jessica Chastain! Usually a style star with power, I’m not sure what she was thinking with her light blue dress at the Golden Globes, which was ill-fitted at the bosom. This is much more like it…of course, it is…it’s Alexander McQueen!

Kerry Washington in Roland Mouret

It’s not always about who Kerry Washington wears but how she effortlessly picks the right dress for her body and always has some kind of high fashion element to the outfit whether its mixed prints or in this case, a sculpted bodice.

Kiernan Shipka in Oscar de la Renta

The darling of the Screen Actors Guild Awards – everyone was raving about Kiernan Shipka‘s beautifully designed tea-length Oscar de la Renta stunner. Perfect!

Marion Cotillard in Dior

Marion Cotillard‘s blue bottom half was underwhelming in comparison the runway version of this Dior Pre-Fall 2013 look, but I loved it. Marion Cotillard almost never goes wrong when it comes to Dior (or knowing what looks good on her).

Nina Dobrev in Elie Saab

Lea Michele in Valentino

Show stopping pink numbers on both Nina Dobrev and Lea Michele made these gowns statements of the evening, and I loved Nina Dobrev’s short sleeves and Lea Michele’s extended ball gown bottom.

Mayim Bialik

Mayim Bialik

We all know Mayim Bialik isn’t really the dress up kind, so we’re pretty impressed she picked this lace-embellished gown in a beautiful color.

In The Navy

Dark blue gowns were a surprise trend of the evening. Did these designers talk to each other? While the midnight blue hue may be subdued to some – it played nicely on the following ladies

Black and White

Another trend we can never get enough of – graphic black and white! Though the embellishments this year were surprising including Jenna Fischer‘s short sleeves, the two toned black and white dresses on Julianna Marguiles and January Jones (black on top, white on bottom and vice versa) and the peek-a-boo on Claire Danes’ Givenchy number, which was right on par with Danes’ signature style but toned down from the Pre-Fall 2013 look.

So Bad It’s Good!

And we don’ t mean worst dressed! Or best dressed! These girls surprised us with their sexy, dominating looks, some of which we never would have expected from the actresses who wore them. See what we mean…

Anne Hathaway in Giambattista Valli

Anne Hathaway in Giambattista Valli

I’m not liking Anne Hathaway’s sudden foray into dark, dominatrix dresses. That dress with the lace up sandals she recently wore to a Les Miserables movie premiere was too much and even that pearl-encrusted blackless white dress was not the Anne I’m used to. I understand she had to cut her hair for a movie role that will probably win her Oscar, but does her style have to go down with it?

Jane Lynch

Jane Lynch

You’re not 25, Jane. But I’m thinking even 25-year olds wouldn’t wear studs on a bosom. Kudos for trying.

Julie Bowen

Julie Bowen in Johanna Johnson

Some say Julie Bowen chose this dress because leather is stretchy and she may be hiding a pregnancy. I’ve never thought of leather as stretchy, or good for a gown for that matter. This is risk-taking and it almost says to me that Julie wanted to go beyond her usual norm. Good girl makes a bad girl style choice. For her, it works!

Jaimie Alexander

Love, Love, LOVE!! This gown fits her perfectly. Ruched at all the right places. Sexy but not overboard. Great!

Naya Riveira in Donna Karan Atelier

A little too much cleavage – you’re on a family show, Naya!

Worst Dressed

Jennifer Garner in Oscar de la Renta

Jennifer Garner was on our best dressed list for the Golden Globes! Not so, here. We like where she was going with this golden gown, but it’s poorly fitted at the hips and looks bad against her pale white skin.

Rose Byrne in Valentino

Many liked Rose Byrne‘s ruffled Valentino number. It’s different – that’s for sure. Not quite liking it as much, and it’s a bit grandmotherly in my opinion…and overly ruffled.

Viola Davis in Monique Lhuillier

This gown fits the actress well, but the bright color makes her look bigger than she is.

Morena Baccarin

I’m not liking the bits of fabric hanging off the bottom.

Alfre Woodard

This gown us just an ugly, ugly color.
