Summary: In describing Mara Hoffman’s Fall 2013 collection at my office today I found myself exclaiming, “There was color! Thank god for all that color!” It’s true that amidst a predominantly dark season, which fall often is, a bright and breezy splash of color is a welcome relief, even if it’s not seen in tweed jackets and knee high boots. Mara Hoffman knows her MO. We all do — light and airy pieces that you imagine carry the scent of salty seawater and pina coladas and inspire metal drum beats wherever you go. And even if her line doesn’t exactly conjure up the image of Fall, Hoffman presented it in the best way she could without losing her signature touch.
The pieces were heavier, more substantial, more formal even. Cold weather seasons bring about a certain sense of mindfulness and purpose, and Hoffman’s pieces seemed to reflect that in her separates boasting vibrant dueling patterns and her layering of neon-colored chunky knits. Of course there were also the ever present caftans and flowing tunics and maxi dresses, but instead of writing them off as too resort or too seasonally inappropriate, Hoffman begs the question, why not? The palette, the prints, and bold embellishments had a snow-weary audience dreaming up exotic locales, a reprieve I can confidently say we were all grateful for. And for all the naysayers that say a onetime swimwear designer can’t do Fall, to them we say: she had boots that were almost knee high. Take that.
