Summary: Set at Pier 59, Kaelen’s upbeat presentation brought new energy to a gloomy day. While inside, one person commented “Well, the real picture is outside!” referencing the misty grey Chelsea Pier with violent choppy waves. Yes, it was quite a scene, but I disagree. Designer Kaelen Haworth delivered a strong presentation of  edgy, layered looks that can easily go from the runway to the streets. The models stood on risers grouped by colors of blacks, greys, purples and burgundies. One can easily be intimidated by the rows of stiff models in uniform five-inch black boots staring out into the crowd. But, as the upbeat music continued along, models shuffled from the risers to the photo shoot in the corner of the studio, while guests socialized over bottles of Perrier.

The looks ranged from wool cocoon coats matched with black silky shorts to laser cut snake print pieces to organza button downs in a violet peony print. The prints were similar to Kaelen’s Spring ’13 collection, but were refreshed in a bright purple color. What’s notable about this collection is the mix of lighter materials such as organza dresses with heavy fabrics like wool and jacquard. A burgundy shearling parka was draped over a violet organza two piece set. This mix of fabrics kept Kaelen’s collection youthful with a serious side–a look that young New York girls will pine after as they try to make themselves look older.

Come fall, it is certain that we will be seeing Haworth’s designs out on the streets as industry go-to girls will love mixing grey peony print dresses with the vibrant purple hues debuted in this presentation.
