At the start of New York Fashion Week, when only Ashlee Simpson and Christina Ricci were the biggest names in the front row, I wondered if any A-lister celebrities were going to show up at all this season. And then when celebrities like Hilary Swank, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Miley Cyrus, and Matt Damon started making their appearances, I realized something important. It’s not only about the celebs in the front row – though I was pretty happy to see fashionistas like Jessica Chastain and Uma Thurman at some of the shows — but just as much about how they dress. For example, Miley Cyrus‘s red jumpsuit was nothing special but Katherine McPhee’s outfits at Diane von Furstenberg and Zac Posen were pretty WOW and I wouldn’t call her an A-list celebrity.
Kudos to the celebs that wowed us at New York Fashion Week, no matter how big and important you are. Here are the celebrities that dressed best at the shows – whether they made one appearance or one of many.
Jaime King at Lela Rose
I’ve always considered Jaime King more of a television star than a fashion star, so I was as surprised as the rest of the world when she showed up to at least three different fashion shows during NYFW, including Kate Spade, Rebecca Minkoff, Prabal Gurung and others. She also dressed fashionably, but appropriately for each, never hesitating to make a style statement when the moment called for it. She also proved she was quite the versatile style star, by going from leather in one show to sparkle in another. One of my favorite choices she made was the print top and pants from Lela Rose at the Lela Rose Fall 2013 presentation. She paired her Lela Rose Cap Sleeve Seamed Shell and slightly darker Lela Rose Skinny Everyday Pants from the designer’s Resort 2013 collection with a Schumacher Cool Parka Coat, earrings, pumps, belt and Carolina Amato gloves. It was graphic and quite bold but it worked.
Allison Williams at Jason Wu
Allison Williams didn’t make too many shows at New York Fashion Week this time around. She was too busy being Katy Perry‘s date at the Grammy Awards in LA. But when she DID make an appearance at New York Fashion Week, as she did at Jason Wu, she made it a memorable one. Wearing a bold red lip and a graphic black and white lace number, with black piping along the pockets in front and a white color of a black top, she did exactly what she was supposed to do. She made her short appearance at NYFW, a stylish and sweet one.
Elizabeth Olsen at Proenza Schouler
There was lots of black and white at New York Fashion Week this season, so when the celebs wore something that wasn’t – it really stood out. Nowhere was this more apparent than Elizabeth Olsen‘s number at the Proenza Schouler show. The duo that make up Proenza Schouler are known for their urban prints and bold colors, which Olsen reflected perfectly, as she posed alongside Liv Tyler, who wore her own take on the urban patterned line, but toned down her bright skirts with a black turtleneck. Olsen, on the other hand, did no such thing – choosing to wear a black, teal and cerulean blue jacket with skinny trousers and silver shoes. The striped clutch also added some awesome, vibrant color. The entire outfit came together perfectly, so much so that we’re wondering if the Proenza Schouler pair styled the whole thing themselves. Were they supposed to match?
Olivia Wilde at Calvin Klein
We all know Calvin Klein is all about structured minimalism, so when a celeb chooses to wear one of Francisco Costa‘s designs that are just slightly out of the box (for Calvin Klein) we are all eyes. That’s exactly what happened when Olivia Wilde chose this intricate dress, which garnered so much more attention than Jessica Chastain’s typical red one (as good as it looked) in the front row. Wilde’s black knee-length dress with blue lace overlay said so much more for the fashionista that we are typically used to at Calvin Klein. And she chose to accessorize it with black studded platforms, a clutch and vibrant coral coat. And that engagement ring from Jason Sudeikas of course. It was the only fashion show she attended this week.
Katherine McPhee at Zac Posen
According to the Fug Girls on Go Fug Yourself, someone actually asked Katherine McPhee why she was wearing pants to the Zac Posen show. Not only are they pants but they are Zac Posen pants – and they look darn good, too! There was also something intricately beautiful about the color, the texture of the jacket and pants, and the blue print collared shirt underneath it all. Though she was in town for his eveningwear show at the Plaza Hotel, McPhee certainly made more of a statement than most of the people in attendance (even the ones that wore full blown gowns) because she looked like she put effort into styling her ensemble and yet wore it all effortlessly. This was also McPhee’s second show of the day – having attended Diane von Furstenberg earlier in a low LOWWWW plunging top that perhaps looked better on camera then it did in person. But it did prove two things – Katherine McPhee is a versatile actress/singer and she can take risks with her clothing, too.
