This past Monday I ventured to a cool loft in midtown to meet tennis legend Venus Williams as she presented the fifth collection of her high-end athletic line, EleVen by Venus Williams. The Fall ’13 collection is comprised of bold florals, black and white colorblocking, and a pink python print in a whole range of combinations and styles. Besides tennis dresses, the collection is comprised of other styles of athletic wear perfect for other types of physical workouts like yoga and running. In fact, you could just wear the pants and jackets to run around town. They are super chic.
While I waited for the opportunity to interview Venus, I sampled some amazing vegan food and shakes prepared by vegan chef, Lauren VanDerPool. I am normally someone who gags just thinking about green shakes, but Lauren changed my mind. Everything was that good. Be sure to check out her cookbook Eat Yourself Sexy: Eat your way to shiny hair, glowing skin and weight loss. Which I too will be purchasing. I digress.
When I was a little girl I had dreams of being either an Olympic figure skater like Dorothy Hamill or a pro tennis player like Chris Evert (am I dating myself?). While neither dream was realized, I did play tennis much longer than I skated. I remember having to wear tennis whites everywhere I played. Not anymore. I should have stuck with it. Venus and her sister have been instrumental in changing what are now considered tennis appropriate, like only true fashionistas could.
Venus told me she loves to keep up on fashion trends, but not everything you see on the runway works in athletic wear. Do we really want to wear menswear on the tennis courts? I think not. She told me for this season she was influenced by colors and prints. “I’ve always loved florals and wanted to incorporate them into the collection for this season,” commented Venus. “My floral print is very bold and bright which looks best when blocked with white or black.”
She told me she is a hands-on designer and just saw the samples of her spring/summer ’14 collection mere minutes before we spoke. Look for her spring ’13 collection in stores later this month.
