Love it or hate it the 80s are back! That’s right, big shoulders, boxy fits, pants with tapered legs… you name it and it’s being showcased on the runways as we speak. One of the more prominent silhouettes I noticed is the oversized jacket. An example is in the Vivienne Westwood Red Label Fall 2013 Collection. Throughout the resort and spring/summer collections, these 80s inspired coats were thrown over suits, flouncy skirts, sexy dresses and just about anything else you can think of.
These coats starting popping up in women’s closets in the 1980s as signs of power as women began to climb the corporate ladder and closed the gap between them and their male counterparts. The big shoulders screamed “I’m here, get used to it!” and the boxy fit brought on a sense of androgyny that was new at that time.
With so many different ways to rock this look – if this is your particular style – then it’s easy to find a jacket that works for you from vintage shops or from 2013 collections. If you’re a newbie to this look, it may be best to ease into it with a simple color; the silhouette could be a lot to handle! But don’t be afraid, it’s very likely a fellow fashionista will commend you on your boldness and your choice. Besides, who doesn’t love a great vintage piece or vintage-inspired?
