If you happen to browse the racks (real or virtual) at nearly any fashionable retailer right now, it is clear that military-inspired styles are all the rage. While simply throwing on anything camouflage can look clichéd (or worse), mixing some utility gear or similarly sturdy pieces into your spring wardrobe is the perfect way to look current yet classic.

Coats – The archetypal peacoat is the obvious place to start with this trend, and this olive version by Moschino Cheap and Chic has some interesting details that set it apart from the standard navy wool options.

Vests – A multi-pocketed sleeve-less piece like this Sanctuary vest is a simple option to throw over basic outfits – it would instantly make them current, and it would easily edge up more girly ensembles.

Jackets – This traditional interpretation of a flack jacket by Barbour would add a current edge to almost anything, making it an excellent transition piece for this spring.

Pants – While full-on camo pants are difficult to style without looking dated, these tonal Ernest Sewn khaki skinny jeans are a perfect way to cash in on the trend in a subtle yet stylish way. Just add a white tee, some heels, and fabulous jewelry and you’re set!

Boots – there’s something about a refined yet rugged boot that simply works with so many different pieces in your wardrobe, and these Clarks fit the bill perfectly. The high heel is feminine, but the rest of the shoe is built for combat.

Watches – Don’t neglect the accessories! A unisex timepiece like this one by Burberry makes a practical statement that works perfectly for day (glam it up more at night though – this is definitely a day-time watch).

So overall, while military chic tends to be on the casual side, it is one ideal and relatively quick way to update your wardrobe for spring 2013 – especially for those who like to add a bit of a tough edge to their look!
